Update: Replace Common Core bill moving in Senate

The Senate Education Committee will be voting on Senator Rusty Glover’s SB101, the Alabama Ahead Act, that will repeal Common Core, this Wednesday, April 15th.  Please contact the committee members, thank them for hearing us at this past Wednesday’s hearing and ask that they vote FOR SB101. Brewbaker, Chairperson; Ross, Vice Chairperson; Bussman, Figures, Marsh, McClendon, Pittman, Sanders, Shelnutt.

SB101 will re-establish local and state control of education; terminate implementation of the Common Core standards; direct the State Board to replace these standards with the Math and English courses in use immediately prior to Common Core; convene Course of Study committees to update these standards and improve upon them using the pre-common core standards from states whose national scores ranked no less than the top 10%; implement these proven, improved standards and aligned assessments; prohibit imposition on Alabama of other such national standards or assessments that cede control away from Alabamians.

See the short DVD by Utah Mental Health Therapist Joan Landes that stresses the urgency of putting a stop to Common Core.  She spoke with some House and Senate members at the Alabama Statehouse last year.

You may want to look up her credentials and send it to your representatives.

We Must Adopt the Best Academic Standards

GUEST COLUMNIST: We must adopt the best academic standards
By Eunie Smith
Published: Saturday, April 4, 2015 at 3:30 a.m.

Under Common Core, Alabama is progressing downward to a woefully inferior academic education under this one-size-fits-all national mandate. The first assessment results show that only 62 percent are proficient in English and only a pitiful 19 percent are proficient in math — so low that it can hardly be explained away. Is it any wonder when we recognize that the whole Common Core regimen is experimental and not written by seasoned educators?

Regarding K-3, over 500 early childhood experts warned that the standards are developmentally inappropriate, and their predictions — that they would only frustrate and depress, not educate and inspire students — are coming true. The elementary math emphasis on theory for students who, at their age, think in concrete, not abstract, terms, and on methodology rather than the correct answer, has the same sad results. Stanford Professor Dr. James Milgram, the only mathematician on the Common Core Validation Committee, said that Common Core math puts students two years behind high-achieving states and nations.

Common Core English language arts standards also place college readiness at risk. It cuts in half the kind of rich classic literature that has leveled the playing field for all students by teaching them to devour increasingly complex plots with their lessons of the perennial struggle between good and evil. Students for centuries have gleaned from these stories a desire to be on the side of the good. Among Common Core substitutes are readings from insulation manuals or excerpts from contemporary works about social studies or recommendations for age inappropriate dark stories of sexual promiscuity and abuse.

Common Core does a terrible disservice to students, whose school experience should prepare them for life, not just low-level jobs. Its denial of American exceptionalism ill equips these students to preserve what is left of the country that has provided more opportunities for more people with the highest standard of living and the greatest degree of individual freedom than any other country in world history. They are not being taught that limiting government increases individual liberty and unleashes creativity and achievement. Instead, too many are taught how to fill out government forms.

Common Core assessment content is out of the hands of Alabamians. It is written under the auspices of a federal contractor, ACT Aspire. Its data collection is being handled by Pearson, the international publisher that was exposed for “spying on students.” Even the liberal National Education Association expressed concern that Pearson is “mining information posted on social media and matching it with students’ private information that Pearson collects as a test provider.” These assessments drive what teachers teach, as they will be graded on how students perform. It was President Jimmy Carter’s education secretary who said that national control of testing means “national control of ideas.”

Regarding assertions that local systems are in control, teachers know that they are closely scrutinized to make sure that they are “Teaching to the Core.” However, Alabama Superintendent of Education Tommy Bice has said publicly, “If teachers do not like the way we are headed, I will be glad to show them the exit sign.” Current legislation prevents teachers from exercising their First Amendment right to criticize Common Core even outside of school.

Alabama College and Career Ready Standards are just the tip of the iceberg. The Common Core Initiative encompasses gathering non-academic individual student data, so-called learning supports, which invade family rights and privacy; grading teachers and principals on how the students score on standardized tests; job tracking of students starting in elementary school; and analyzing, in some cases via weekly assessments, to determine what career cluster the student will be placed into by 8th grade. This can limit a student’s horizons long before they are ready to choose for themselves.

As one astute commentator said, “Common Core changes the focus of traditional education from teaching students how to be future citizen-leaders and productive citizens of a self-governing republic, to training students for a planned economy (and to meet specific needs of employers).”

Sen. Rusty Glover’s SB 101 has our support because it would put a stop to Common Core, regain local control of education and begin the process to formulate new Alabama standards built upon past academic success using the best of the best pre-Common Core standards nationwide.

Science Textbook Reviewers Needed!

Dear Concerned Citizen:

Eagle Forum has facilitated participation in textbook review by Alabamians for decades.  We are writing to you today because of your interest in education and concern for the students of our great state.  The next textbook committee will be reviewing science textbooks. These textbooks will be used by our students for six years.  As you know, science is a discipline that can be controversial.  We cannot overstate the importance of this committee.  It is critical that knowledgeable citizens with traditional values have input in this process.  As an example: U.S. News and World Report noted the Obama administration wants students and teachers to “toe the line” on global warming/climate change.  Instead of healthy debate with both sides of the issue on man made change; we can expect some of the textbooks to indoctrinate even though over 1,000 international scientists dispute the 2010 United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (and former VP Al Gore) as a fraud.

If you have expertise in the field of science we would like to hear from you.  The textbook committee is composed of 28 members and includes nine members appointed by Governor Bentley and confirmed by the senate who are “lay” members – one from each of the 7 Congressional districts and two local school board members.  These appointees cannot currently be employed in the field of education.  Mileage expenses and lodging (if overnight stay is required) are reimbursable.  The meetings will be held at the Gordon Persons Building in Montgomery.

The deadline for resumes to be submitted is April 2.  If you are interested in serving, please email (preferable) your resume to or fax your resume to 205-871-2859 and include your congressional district on the cover page.

Thank you for considering this very important position.

Hearing in Montgomery on Monday

Dear Eagles,

We need your help! You have a great opportunity to fight Common Core and Plan 2020 in Alabama. The ALSDE has proposed a Comprehensive Counseling and Guidance Model (CCGM) which is a major part of the intrusive data collection of the Common Core Initiative.A public hearing before State Department personnel will be held this coming Monday night.
We can stop this CCGM now before it is fully implemented. CCGM is a new set of guidelines and policies for Alabama public school counselors which moves them from their traditional role of providing
constructive career and academic advising to being an all inclusive life advisor with no limits on their involvement in the life of the child and parent.Hearing: March 30, 2015 at Trenholm State Technical College,
1225 Airbase Boulevard, Building D, Montgomery, AL 36108 from 7:00 p.m. to
8:00 p.m.
Please attend this event and voice your opposition to CCGM.

You will want to voice your opinion to the members of the State Board of Education who will vote on the Model in June.

In February, Eagle Forum submitted to the State Board of Education a review of an earlier version of this plan detailing its Constitutional and family rights violations. It appears to have been only slightly
revised. Go to this link to read and review the current draft CCGM for yourself.

Please contact Deborah Garrett at (205) 879-7096 or by cell (205) 587-6534 for any questions or more information on CCGM.

Alabama Teachers Speak In Spite of Threats

  • Current Alabama teacher who must remain anonymous to keep her job: “My husband said to me, ‘You’re like an artist who has been placed on an assembly line, and those children are products going across that line’.  Yes; we’re cookie cutter teachers producing cookie cutter children…”

It is vital that you hear these teachers who speak for their peers to understand how Common Core is affecting their teaching, their classroom and their students.

The teachers we interviewed each have their own channel link below.  To make the videos more “watchable” we took each question and separated it into individual videos that range from 20 seconds to 3+ minutes.  That way you don’t have to watch one long video, but rather you can watch the responses to the questions in which you are most interested.  Click on the channel link or the picture and then scroll down to watch the individual question videos.

If you are currently teaching and you would like to be interviewed about the negative impact that Common Core is having on your classroom and/or your students then contact  Subject line: “TEACHER INTERVIEW”.   We can disguise your identity, if requested, by masking the video and changing your voice.

Current AL Teacher Speaks Out-Insists Identity Hidden

This channel features a current Alabama elementary school teacher who believes she MUST speak publicly about the negative impact that Common Core is having on her young students.  She is fearful of loosing her job for speaking out so we masked her image and changed her voice.  Click here to go to the channel then you can scroll down to click on the questions and watch her responses.

Teacher Given Ultimatum: Either Stop Posting Negative Comments About CC or Quit Teaching–She Quit!

In 2013, Carol Brown, a 19 year veteran teacher, was very concerned about the changes she saw in her students due to Common Core.  She was posting her concerns on Facebook.  Shortly after that her superiors told her to stop posting negative comments or quit.  She decided it was more important to tell parents the truth rather than to continue to promote what she knew was harmful to children. Click here to access Carol’s channel then scroll down to click on the questions and watch her responses.

Huntsville Title 1 School Teacher Leaves Teaching

Mike Parsons was a teacher in Huntsville, AL.  He saw the changes that happened to education after Common Core was implemented and he was alarmed.  He now speaks across the state to educate people on why Common Core needs to be stopped.  Click here to access Mike’s channel then scroll down to click on the questions and watch his responses.

Retired Teacher Is Now An Influential Activist

Lisa Harris is a retired teacher from Georgia who lives in Tuscaloosa, AL.  She has been on the forefront of the Stop Common Core movement in Alabama.  She speaks all over the state about the federal takeover of education through Common Core.  In her interview, Lisa not only addresses policies that most parents/citizens are unaware of but she also shares what she witnessed in the classroom. Click here to access Lisa’s channel then scroll down to click on the questions and watch her responses.

These interviews were conducted by Wetumpka TEA Party President,  Becky Gerritson,  produced by Jack Temple Video and paid for by Eagle Forum of Alabama.  Distribution of videos provided by The Wetumpka TEA Party with permission to redistribute.

Act NOW to Stop Common Core

Dear Friend,

If we are to stop the distress, the dumbing down, and the indoctrination of all our children through common core; if we are to restore state control over education policy in Alabama; if we are to replace common core with the best of the best standards in the nation that reflect Alabama values, YOU will have to act NOW!!!  And ask all your like-minded friends to do the same.  We need an avalanche of emails to the legislature.

Sen. Rusty Glover (R) has introduced SB101. It will re-establish local and state control of education; terminate implementation of the Common Core standards; direct the State Board to replace these standards with the Math and English courses in use immediately prior to Common Core; convene Course of Study committees to update these standards and improve upon them using the pre-common core standards from states whose national scores ranked no less than the top 10%; implement these proven, improved standards and aligned assessments; prohibit imposition on Alabama of other such national standards or assessments that cede control away from Alabamians.

1. Call or email these Senators and thank them for co-sponsoring SB101 and let them know if you are their constituent. Glover, Reed, Melson, Allen, Brewbaker, Hightower, Albritton, Bussman, Stutts, Smith, Shelnutt, Sanford.  Tell them briefly why your family wants common core replaced.

2. Please email and call your state senator and Sen. Del Marsh and Gov. Bentley and tell them briefly why your family wants common core replaced.  Ask them to put SB101 on a fast track!

3. Call or email your House member and Speaker Hubbard.  Tell them briefly why you oppose common core. Ask them to replace common core this legislative session.

Alabama’s children will be increasingly stifled, frustrated, and controlled if common core continues.  We are on the wrong road and we need to turn around before we become hopelessly lost.  We must stand for what works to give our children the tools they need to reach their fullest God-given, self-chosen potential.  It is up to you. We Will Defend Alabama’s Probate Judges

An Open Letter to Alabama Legislators,

In an effort to help you encourage your local Probate Judges to stand for natural marriage, I am forwarding the excerpted email below from Mat Staver, chairman of Liberty Counsel.  He has pledged to defend those who refuse to perform ceremonies that violate Alabama’s Constitution.

Support for those who resist this judicial tyranny comes from the Alabama Baptist Board of Missions,Franklin Graham, and the 81% of Alabamians who voted for the sanctity of marriage amendment – among many others!

Please read Phyllis Schlafly’s 1/28/2015 column to understand why:

·          “It’s long past time for the U. S. Supreme Court to reaffirm the principle that the federal courts can not interfere in state domestic relations”.

Additionally, I call to your attention the Marriage Statement in the 2009 Manhattan Declaration co-authored by Dean Timothy George (Beeson Divinity School at Samford University), the late Chuck Colson, and McCormick Professor of Jurisprudence at Princeton University, Dr. Robert George It has close to one million signers.  Included is this statement:

“No one has a civil right to have a non-marital relationship treated as marriage.  Marriage is an objective reality – a covenantal union of husband and wife – that it is the duty of the law to recognize and support for the sake of justice and the common good…  If it fails to do so, genuine social harms follow.  First, the religious liberty of those for whom this is a matter of conscience is jeopardized.  Second, the rights of parents are abused as family life and sex education programs in schools are used to teach children that an enlightened understanding recognizes as “marriages” sexual partnerships that many parents believe are intrinsically non-marital and immoral.  Third, the common good of civil society is damaged …”

May God bless you in these critical times as you seek to deter the condoning of actions that God and civilized society have condemned for centuries as unhealthy.

Eunie Smith, President
Eagle Forum of Alabama
(205) 879-7096

In an escalating battle for natural marriage, Alabama has become ground zero.  The state is in judicial chaos after a federal judge ruled that Alabama’s marriage law is unconstitutional. Alabama Supreme Court Chief Justice Roy S. Moore took issue with the ruling and rightly declared that probate judges are not required to preside over same-sex “marriage” ceremonies.  Liberty Counsel will defend the probate judges who follow the direction of Chief Justice Moore. Please see my important update on this pressing matter – Mat.

It is fitting that Alabama’s motto is, “We dare defend our rights,” while the battle to preserve natural marriage is raging in that southern state.  Last month, U.S. District Court Judge Callie Granade ruled that Alabama’s prohibition on same-sex marriage was unconstitutional, and then put her decision on hold until yesterday.
Yesterday morning, the Supreme Court of the United States refused Alabama Attorney General Luther Strange’s request to extend the judge’s hold on the order until the High Court rules on the matter this summer. …

Liberty Counsel agrees with Chief Justice Moore. The Alabama probate judges are not bound by an opinion of a single federal judge. This sole federal judge does not have jurisdiction to order all state probate judges to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples. As members of the state judicial branch, probate judges are not bound by the decisions of the lower federal courts, as confirmed by multiple Alabama and U.S. Supreme Court cases.

We will defend any probate judge who is challenged on their refusal to perform a same-sex marriage.
In 2006, 81 percent of Alabama voters opposed a same-sex marriage initiative. Nationwide, the expressed legal will of tens of millions of Americans have been trampled under foot by judicial activism on the issue of marriage.

+ + Now is the time for Americans who are concerned about the moral collapse in our nation to rise up and take action by standing for marriage!  This battle is far from over. …

+ + An escalating “marriage” quagmire.

Right now, Liberty Counsel is also involved in numerous other cases to affirm that natural marriage is not subject to redefinition by a court or legislature. We are aggressively defending the rights of citizens to declare that natural marriage is the standard for their state and locality.

We are standing with Christian business owners who decline same-sex “marriage” business, which would force them to participate in something that violates their consciences. We are empowering these business owners to stand against the personal assaults, demonstrations, and demonization by radical homosexual activists.

Last month, the High Court agreed to review a federal appeals court decision that upheld natural marriage laws in Michigan, Ohio, Kentucky, and Tennessee. Again, our legal team will be actively engaged in that hearing.  I firmly believe that this is a crucially important and winnable battle.

God bless you abundantly for standing on behalf of God-ordained, natural marriage.

Mat Staver, Founder and Chairman
Liberty Counsel

P.S. Marriage laws nationwide are in horrible confusion as is evidenced recently in Florida and now in Alabama.  This disorder and division in lower jurisdictions is what can be expected when judicial activists force their will on society!

Stop APUSH from Destroying Students’ Love of America

Stop APUSH from Destroying Students’ Love of America

This month 500,000 high school sophomores and juniors will begin courses based on the College Board’s redesigned AP US History Framework (APUSH). “…the College Board has turned AP American History into a briefing document on progressive and leftist views of America’s pastaccording to National Association of Scholars President Peter Wood. He writes further that Jane Robbins and veteran AP teacher Larry Kreiger “ justly complain that the new framework ‘advances a negative view of America’, dwells on the [so-called] ‘rigid racial hierarchy’ of colonial times’, and ‘ignores US founding principles’.”  Hear an important discussion by Robbins and Kreiger here.

  • Gone are major historical figures like John Winthrop (“city on a hill”), Ben Franklin, James Madison, Thomas Jefferson, Roger Williams; minimized is George Washington who “gave a Farewell Address”.
  • Gone are the sacrifices for freedom made by patriots throughout the years: the American Revolution (Bunker Hill, Yorktown), WWI, WWII major battles like D-Day, Battle of the Bulge, the Tuskegee Airmen
  • Gone are 134 standards from the Alabama Social Studies Course of Study including the Boston Tea Party, Patrick Henry, Theodore Roosevelt, Martin Luther King, etc. See Eagle Forum letter to State Board members for comparison of Alabama standards vs. AP Framework here.
  • Gone is evidence of the goodness and greatness of America!!!.
  • Included is a relentlessly negative view of American history, which emphasizes every problem and failing of our ancestors  [real or perceived] while ignoring or minimizing their achievements
  • Included is a biased and inaccurate view of many important facets of American history including the motivations and actions of 17th-19th century settlers, American involvement in WWII, and the conduct of the Cold War
  • Included is a Marxist view of America evidently inspired by Howard Zinn’s “People’s History of the US”, which is listed in each of 4 syllabi from the Framework.

According to Mr. Kreiger 90% of AP teachers detest these changes as “garbage”.  But the AP exam questions will come directly from this new framework so obviously teachers will have to teach it if their students are to perform well on the tests that can give them college credit. The new 98-page Framework replaces the traditional 5-page Topic Outline that had been used for decades.

1. Call and email the Governor and your State Board of Education Member. Ask them to pass theresolution here that demands the College Board delay implementation and rewrite the AP US History Curriculum Framework so that it does not conflict with Alabama Standards and meets Alabama’s statutory requirement for the teaching of “established facts of American history, tradition and patriotism” §16-35-4
Ask them to uphold academic scholarship instead of radical ideology.

2. Read the talking points here and then call the College Board to object to their rewriting of American History.  Tell them their monopolistic position will surely be challenged if their framework is not revised to enable the presentation of an academically accurate and balanced view of American history that prepares students for constructive citizenship. Most students will not have another course in American history. They will never know why patriots including the Greatest Generation fought and died.  They will not know the value of freedom.  See other resources at

3. Sign the open letter to David Coleman, President of the College Board here.  You may remember that he is the “architect” of the English Language Arts Common Core Standards.  Those standards include literacy in History, Social Studies, Science and Technical Subjects.

Freedom is not free; it has to be earned by each succeeding generation.  It can be lost in one

Obama Requests $3.7 Billion in Emergency Funding

Take Action!July 8, 2014

Following criticism from the amnesty crowd, President Obama has retreated on sending unaccompanied illegal children back to their home country. However, the President is making a $3.8 billion emergency supplemental request to Congress to help manage the problem instead of working to stop it. The emergency funding would go to several federal agencies, including the Departments of Justice, Homeland Security, State, and Health and Human Services for more immigration judges, additional housing facilities and border patrols agents.

We are not surprised that the President is backing down from a tougher immigration policy; after all, his refusal to enforce existing laws and his promises of amnesty are the primary reason that thousands of Central Americans are trying their luck at the border, despite its dangers.

Additionally, regarding the unaccompanied minors, the William Wilberforce Act of 2008 requires that minors from non-contiguous countries be transferred into the custody of HHS instead of being expeditiously deported back to their country of origin. The bill was first introduced by former Senator Joe Biden and then pushed by Senator Dianne Feinstein, swiftly passing through the House and Senate in a 24-hour period during a lame duck session of Congress in 2008. This law prevents swift deportations and has led to crowded, unsafe conditions at the holding facilities.

The Congress must demand that this law be changed so that illegal children from non-contiguous countries are treated the same as illegal children from Mexico and Canada. This change in the law is the most critical demand because it will likely stop the influx of illegal children and families. Supposedly, the Administration will be requesting this change separately, but this change should be made before the President’s funding is considered.

The Senate Appropriations Committee is scheduled for a full committee hearing on Thursday of this week. The House Appropriations Committee hearing has yet to be set.

President Obama should not receive any funding until the following conditions are met:

  • The 2008 law should be changed so that unaccompanied minors, regardless of their home country, are all treated the same way. This means that they are quickly interviewed by Border Patrol officers in order to determine if they can claim “credible fear” in their home country, and if they cannot, they are quickly and humanely repatriated.

Then, through the Appropriations process, these conditions should be written into law:

  • No foreign aid will be sent to the sending countries until they agree to take back their citizens; and
  • All extra domestic money should go to the Border Patrol and ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations to detain, process, and remove the illegal crossers. Emergency supplemental funding should NOT go to: the Department of Health and Human Services to warehouse illegals; to any agency to transport the illegals around the U.S.; and certainly not to the “charities” paid to resettle refugees across the nation.
Take Action!

Please call Sen. Shelby and Rep. Roby as shown below.  Please email your Congressman and Senators immediately, and demand they make these conditions for funding.

A Cool 4th of July

A Cool 4th of July:  See “America: Imagine the World Without Her”

Dinesh D’Souza’s movie “America: Imagine the World Without Her” is a must see for all patriots. Viewing it would a great way to spend your 4th of July in celebration of our nation’s birth.  The movie starts with a musing on what might have happened if George Washington had been killed during the Revolutionary  War, leading to the erasure of Mount Rushmore, the Statue of Liberty and other icons of America.

D’Souza addresses the main assertions by America haters such as former professor Ward Churchill and Bill Ayers, giving them through interviews the venue to speak to the issue of America from their perspective.  He addresses the fallacies of their bias against America such as the treatment of American Indians, the “stealing of land from Mexico”, Slavery, American  “imperialism”, and “greedy Capitalism”.   He particularly addresses the inaccuracies in Howard Zinn’s A People’s History of the United States, which has been required reading in Madison City Schools 11th grade ELA classes.

The docudrama includes action scenes from America’s past as well as thoughtfully presented facts.  D’Sousa even includes Alabama’s own Becky Gerritson of the Wetumpka Tea Party with her moving testimony before the Congressional hearing on the IRS as he addresses the overreach of our present government and the threats to our freedoms.  He ends with a charge to all freedom loving Americans to do their part to preserve the idea that is America.

Elaine Little, Vice President
