MEDICAL MARIJUANA UP FOR VOTE IN THE ALABAMA SENATE THIS WEEK

Rumor has it that the Alabama Senate will take up the debate on “Medical Marijuana” this week.  Below are a few reasons Eagle Forum opposes this bill.  If you agree with us please contact your Senator today and ask them to vote “NO” on SB165. The vote could be as early as Tuesday.  The Marijuana lobby is here in force and is working hard to pass this bill.

A FEW THOUGHTS TO CONSIDER:

1. Is it smart to have legislators approve medications rather than scientists?

2. Marijuana is a Schedule 1 drug, the same class as heroin, LSD and peyote.  Schedule 1 is the most restrictive drug class!  It is on that list for 3 reasons: 1.) High potential for abuse, 2.) Has currently no accepted medical use in treatment in the U.S. 3.) Has a lack of safety for use under medical supervision.

3.  It’s against Federal Law:  Our legislators took an oath to uphold and defend the U.S. Constitution and our laws.  By supporting this legislation they are breaking their oath.

PROBLEMS WITH SB165

1.  “Medical grade cannabis” is never defined.  This is a glaring problem.  What percent of THC (Delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol, the psychoactive compound found in the cannabis plant)  is allowed under this law?  3%, 6% 9%, or more?   What is the ratio between THC and CBD  (Cannabidiol- is the non-psychoactive compound found in the cannabis plant that is not typically associated with euphoric or “high” feelings.)  This is crucial information to know and to be regulated.

2. Doctors may qualify to prescribe “medical marijuana” just by taking a 4 hour class and exam (not to cost more than $500.)  Marijuana contains at least 750 chemicals, among which are some 104 different cannabinoids.  Marijuana is a drug with idiosyncratic effects.  Unlike minimal or moderate use of alcohol and tobacco, the use of even a small amount of marijuana affects a person’s mental functioning in a variety of predictable and unpredictable ways. Since marijuana is not an FDA approved drug, interactions with other prescribed drugs are unknown.  A four-hour class does not instill confidence that this is anything more than a large scale medical experiment.

OUR RECOMMENDATIONS:
1.  Vote “NO” on SB165.  Call your senator today-leave a message for him/her to vote “NO” on medical marijuana.

2.  Keep medical marijuana in a clinical setting in Alabama where it can be studied and the results can be carefully documented and evaluated which can then lead to actual FDA approval and safe usage.

3.  Expand Leni’s Law and Carly’s law to include more research in a clinical setting for children with complicated neurological disorders.
