The Olive Spann Award honors this quiet heroine of the conservative movement in Alabama who volunteered her gifts for years. Calling herself an “old maid”, she unofficially adopted everyone else’s children and set about to better their future. When she was in the 9th grade, her father died so she went to work to help raise her younger siblings. She recruited a Stop ERA leader in every county in the state so that legislators would know that their constituents did not want a unisex society mandated in our United States Constitution. That was in 1972. The award is given to that Eagle Forum volunteer who in the eyes of previous recipients has made the most significant contribution to our goals in the past year.
