- State-sponsored predatory gambling/lotteries are a regressive tax, and they prey upon the poor and most vulnerable.
- Gambling is an irresponsible way to raise funds for the state government.
- Gambling sucks money out of the economy. (Money that would be spent at local businesses, grocery stores and investments, etc., will now be spent to buy lottery tickets.)
- The negatives that gambling brings to a state far outweigh the revenues gained. It is estimated that for every $1.oo that the state receives in tax revenue from gaming, $3.00 goes out in social costs!
- Gambling addiction ranks within the top 10 most common addictions.
o 60% of those addicted to gambling will commit crimes.
o 20% of addicted have filed for bankruptcy
o 50% will abuse spouses and children.
o 20% of the homeless are gambling addicts.
o 50% of gambling addicts will divorce.
o The average (gambling) debt is between $63,000 and $110,000.
- A state-run lottery is considered Class III gaming and is prohibited by Alabama Constitution.
- If state legislature passes a Constitutional Amendment to allow Class III gambling, it would then go to a ballot for Alabamians to vote on during a statewide election. If approved, the State would be obligated to allow all types of Class III gaming including Las Vegas-style casinos, card games, casino games, digital /electronic games of chance… sports betting, and a lottery. Citizens would then lose their ability to stop gambling expansion in the future.
