Week 10 Update-Only 2 of Our Tracked Bills Passed House or Senate

WEEK 10 (Apr 22-24)

OUR BILLS MOVE SLOWLY THIS WEEK

Week 10 was a quiet one as far as our tracked bills passing the House or Senate.

  • HB479 (Rep. Brinyark) A bill we support that would remove the Electronic Registration Information Center (ERIC) as a voter registration database that the board of registrars or the Secretary of State may use to identify voters whose addresses may have changed passed the House and is now headed to the Senate.  (SIDE NOTE: Alabama has replaced ERIC with AVID.  AVID is a four-prong system that helps to maintain a clean and accurate registered voter list. The four aspects of AVID include a cooperative inter-agency agreement with Alabama Law Enforcement Agency, National Change of Address File, cooperative agreements with other states and analysis of the Social Security Death Index.)

  • SB278 (Sen. Shelnutt) Under existing law, the State Board of Education has a policy providing elective credit to students who attend religious instruction during the school day, and each local board of education may choose whether to implement the policy. This bill would require each local board of education to implement a policy allowing elective credit to students who are released from the classroom to attend religious instruction during the school day, provided each local board of education may tailor the policy to meet their needs.  We support this bill.  It passed out of the Senate and is headed to the House.
